Bathroom Tile

Bathroom Tile Has Come a Long Way

It wasn’t long ago that mundane tile was the only choice for bathroom floors and tub/shower walls. Builders specified humdrum tile and customers indifferently accepted. If you built a house or remodeled your bathroom, you more than likely had a 4” x 4” ceramic tile that was white, almond or a beautiful pink, green, blue, or yellow.

Now the options are almost unlimited. Bathroom tile is available in hundreds of sizes, colors, and patterns. Today’s bathroom tile can look like stone, glass or wood. Tile showers are limited only by your imagination. Tile can be used to create a simple monochromatic design or a design filled with different patterns and colors that create a dramatic statement.

Bathroom tile designs can be flexible allowing the creation of custom seats, recessed shelves of any size, accent or feature strips, and odd sized showers. Tile can be used to create level-entry-showers. Level entry refers to the lack of a curb or threshold–no transition between the shower and the bathroom floor.

The greatest advancement in bathroom tile has been the way tile is installed. Old installation methods were unreliable and often led to water leaks and high maintenance. Re-Bath of the Triad uses the latest technology to give its customers the most durable, easy to clean, and leak-proof tile installation available.

Some tile shower bases are still built by hand, which takes several days, requires a rubber liner that is prone to rips, tears, and nail holes and is only as good as the person who performs the installation. Re-Bath uses a preformed base to set the tile. The base has an integral drain pocket and the slope is formed perfectly at the factory, not left to the ability of the installer. The pan includes tile flanges that prohibit water from entering the seam where the wall meets the shower floor. Using a manufactured pan saves time and creates a watertight installation.

The old method of installing tile walls was to install lath and a coat of cement. The success of this system was, again in the hands of the installer. The corners were not sealed, so expansion and contraction allowed water to leak through the grout and into the corners.

Now a special waterproof tile board is installed and all the joints, nail or screw holes, and corners are sealed with tape and special rubberized sealer to prevent leaks.

Cement grout has long been the Achilles heel of tile installations. Old-school grout is porous, attracted mold and soap scum, and is hard to clean. Sealers are used to improve the grout’s performance, but have to be applied often. Research and development in the area of grout formulation has led to the advent of new products, which outperform traditional sealed grouts and are easier to use and less costly than epoxy grouts.

After using all the different types of grout, we found Flexcolor CQ to be the best grout for workability, durability and maintenance. It is the result of years of development in grout technology and uses Quartz and a styrene acrylic copolymer instead of sand and cement. Flexcolor CQ is stain and chemical resistant, crack resistant, and mold and mildew resistant, which makes it easy to clean. Flexcolor CQ never needs sealing and will perform beautifully for the life of the tile installation.
